LED ZEPPELIN's 'Stairway' Tops Rock Song Poll
December 24, 2004LED ZEPPELIN's "Stairway to Heaven is the best rock song of all time, according to a survey published today, reports Ireland On-Line.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" by QUEEN, "Smoke On The Water" by DEEP PURPLE and "Hotel California" by THE EAGLES all made the top 10.
But the 1971 LED ZEPPELIN classic polled over 70 percent of the vote in the survey by radio station Planet Rock.
The song was never even released as a single but has been covered by everyone from Rolf Harris to Dolly Parton.
"The number one may be seen as a rock cliché but the truth is that it’s probably the only rock song ever written that most fans can agree is a classic," said Planet Rock presenter Mark Jeeves.
"After all these years, there’s still nothing to touch it."
LED ZEPPELIN had two other entries in the top 10 — "Whole Lotta Love" at six and "Rock and Roll" at 8.
"Freebird" by LYNYRD SKYNYRD came second in the list, followed by "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Smoke on the Water" and BLACK SABBATH classic "Paranoid".
"Highway to Hell" by AC/DC and "All Along the Watchtower" by the JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE also made the top 10.
The entire top 100 is being counted down on the digital station between 8am and 5pm on Christmas Day.
